I was just talking to Mark Guyton about pros and cons of a shackle reversal the other day. Hey says they ride better, but the front end tends to dive whenever you hit the brakes. How would you hurt the driveshaft by a shackle reversal? The axle would move rearward when you flex, thus making the shaft collapse. I think that's better than stock, where the axle pulls the driveshaft out when it goes up (axle pushes forward). I mean the driveshaft moves in and out whether the shackle's in the front or the rear of the axle right? I mean it makes sense to me... Just put a coil conversion on it Craig and be done with it. -RC i was thinking more along the lines of this... if the driveshaft pulls out, nothing is damaged really... unless the splines get messed up from banging around. i would rather a ds pull apart than get compressed and break a joint, or worse, something internal on the t-case or diff... i dont even know if that would happen, but you never know what might happen really... im not a big fan of leaf springs myself, unless thats what you already have to work with.

thanks for all your replies. the DS is more likely to fall out with a shackle reversal when the axle droops, if the shaft doesn't have enough slip. there would only be a problem with the DS failing b/c of compression if the shaft doesn't fit properly. i have seen it happen, and it blew a D18 case into several pieces.
here's why i'm running leaf springs on this build: 1. they are simple 2. cheap (less than $50 in this case) 3. the M38 will have around an 84-87" WB, and short wheelbase rigs don't need as much travel 4. i want to keep the purity of the jeep, even though i'm not using stock leaf packs 5. your grandfather 'wheeled the Rubicon with them 60 years ago in his flatfender
JP, what's your opinion on the shackle reversal debate. i remember you said something about it a while back in the forums.

also, i'm not going to drive the jeep much on the road, so i'm mainly concerned with the differences off road.

I think it was in my YJ stretch thread where the topic came up...

craig, sorry if i came off sounding like i dont think you should use leafs... for this project, i think it fits perfectly, especially if you already have some leafs to work with. the statement i made earlier was just a generalization, but you know how things sometimes come out on discussion boards. its hard to comprehend sometimes...

I'm just trying to clean out my garage.(tj coils)I think the leafs are great.I would probably do the reversal .I was reading about the pros and cons in one of the monthly mags not to long ago.The mag said that for the trail and rocks it leaned more toward the reversal but not by much,But the ride it got was a little smoother.I think they used a pretty stiff shock if not an air shock of sorts.

yeah, that's the bad thing about forums-you can't determine the tone of the reply. i didn't think you were implying that chip, i was just stating my reasons for running leafs. i apologize if my reply came off like a smart a$$.
i have read and read over the past seven or eight years in the mags, books, and the 'net on the subject, but i think it's personal preference in the end, like Ford vs. Chevrolet and SOA vs. SUA. each has advantages and disadvantages, but i don't have personal experience with either. my friends rusty, jerry, jason, and kalem run their shackles in the front. my other friend terry built a reversal. both work. i just need to make up my mind.
them springs in the garage ain't hangin' themselves...back to work in the morning. have a good night and day tomorrow guys.

Update: I have the suspension roughed in and tacked together waiting on t-case adapter to come in the mail so I can put weight on the springs and burn in caster, pinion, and shackle angles. I reversed the front springs and hung them as tight to the frame as possible for approach angle - at this point is looks as if I will have between a 70 and 80 approach angle when it is done. Here's a pic:

Another of the rear crossmember and shackle hangers...Note that the springs are for mock up purposes...I will run more than 2 leaves.
