After the headlights are run for a while the headlights start blinking on and off. i can go down to just parking lights for a minute or two then can turn the headlights back on and they'll work for a while then start blinking again. i feel around the headlight switch and it is pretty hot and the wires running into it are too, but the wires leading out to the lights are cool. Any suggestions or ideas?

check for a bad ground first, then check the voltage regulator, then the alternator to see if it's producing enough juice. I had a similar problem on my early bronco, and it was the voltage regulator.

It sounds like you are getting an intermittent connection in your headlight switch when it gets hot. Most of the time heat around around a certain component or cable is an indication of a bad/faulty connection. Every CJ that I have owned the headlight switch was the first thing I replaced. I remember a CJ5 that I had once the lights would blink off for about 2 seconds every 2 minutes or so. It made the ride interesting above 55 mph. A new switch and it was fixed. Certainly, the ground would be the first thing I would check.

Thanks for the advice! It is a CJ5, i replaced the headlight switch first thing too, it is still doing the blinking though. not sure what or where the voltage regulator is or would be? i will check for a bad ground too!

Your alternator may be a GM style that has the voltage regulator built in. All of my CJ's have been that way. Usually when the voltage regualtor quits on those the alternator just quits charging all together.
Have you changed your foot switch? That will be a place for a bad connection to occur.

I always had trouble with the foot switch. I have replaced mine many times. By the way autozone will only replace a lifetime part 4 times before they give you your money back!

Ditto on the foot switch. Also there is a popular mod that uses your headlight wiring to trigger a relay instead of the lights themselves and the relay powering the lights off of a direct battery connection. Supposed to make your lights brighter and keep the wiring cooler with fewer chances of burning out components like switches because of less resistance running through the system. It would take 1 relay for the low beams and 1 relay for the high beams. I plan on doing this someday when I get around to it. See: www.jeepfan.com/projects/headlight-relay.htm

The headlights seem a little brighter! The main benefit is they stay on all the time now! Ha! thanks for all the input and help! thinking of going to propane and a roll cage next! maybe!

Good deal! Yeah, I had the pull-out light switch do that on my wife's mustang many years ago. Nothing like tearing down the back roads of Alabama at 11:00pm and having the lights go off. Kinda freaky.

I know ya'll are getting tired of my headlight problems, but here we go again! After installing the relay upgrade things were good for a while, but now when i turn on the headlights i get nothing, and if i leave them on after a while they come on!? I tested the wires coming to and from the switch, I have one wire coming in that is hot and then nothing going out towards the footswitch (all other lights work except headlights). (Read on this site www.inajeep.com/cjbuildup/mybuildup13.asp, that there are two hot wires coming into the switch one of which is just for the headlights?) i only have one coming in hot, at least when they are not working. i thought it might have been the switch burnt out from before i installed relays; replaced it, same situation. any body know what other wires should be hot coming to the switch? or any other ideas?

You have got and intermittent break somewhere in the circuiit. If you have changed the dash switch and the floor switch, then it has to be in your wiring harness somewhere. It would be hard to run that down. At this point I probably would put a toggle switch with a hot to your foot switch and bypass the dash switch. I have a 71 Bronco that has that very thing done to it.
Just a thought.

Thanks rob i thought of doing that then i found what was causing the problem. My direct hot wire that runs to my relays had a loose connection...something easy i just missed! thanks as always for the input! wish i had more to offer others, but still learning much!!
