This gets long so bear with me...
Okay... here is my situation. As I posted on Craig's thread, I was planning to run a 231-d300 doubler behind my TH350. I thought I was going to be smart and just use a chevy 231 and factory adapter to keep from having to buy an aftermarket adapter to mate the chevy trans with a jeep 231 ($400, not an option). Well, the chevy 231 came behind a 700r4 from the factory and even though the 700 and 350 have the same 4 bolt pattern on the back, the output shaft on my th350 is too short. So, I am faced with either swapping out the output in my transmission, buying an aftermarket adapter and use a jeep case(again, not really an option), or fabbing a custom adapter, to make the 231 work.
Well, I was reading the latest edition of Crawl and saw that 2 companies listed in there make a 203 to D300 adapter. I happen to have a couple 203's in good shape as well, with the factory th350 adapters. The pros? The 203 is nearly indestructable as a range box and has a cast iron case where the 231 is aluminum. The aluminum 231 seems like it would be a weak point with the cast iron dana 300 hanging off the back of it. Also, I would save some money trying to make the 231 bolt to the th350. The cons? The 203 is only about a 2:1 low range where the 231 is a 2.6*:1. The 203-300 combo would be heavier. The kits to adapt the 203 to the d300 are a little more expensive ($499-699 for the 203-300 as opposed to $415-500 for the 231-300).
So, which route would you take? Northwestfab.com and Jedsmachining.com are the 2 companies that make the 203 doublers and d&d machine and mad rooster off-road are the two that make the 231-300 doubler. Do any of you know of anybody running the 203 to 300 combo? What would you do?
