I am wondering which would be best for a trail rig that sees 98% of trail riding and 2 % of short trips on pavement ?

Bias Ply.
Radials, by design, are not going to wrap up like bias ply tires will.

Bias Ply. Radials, by design, are not going to wrap up like bias ply tires will. Generally, radials tend to be more flexible and have more sidewall flex, but they also, generally, have thinner sidewalls, which no one wants. I had some radial Iroks for a while, and they hooked up great, but I got them b/c I drove them on the street a good bit. This doesn't change my recommendation though, I'd still go with the bias just for the thicker sidewalls.
