I had a compression check done on my 258. I ended up finding out that I had 0 compression in one of by cylinders. Is it worth trying to have that one rebuilt or should I try getting one thats already been rebuilt. Is it safe to drive on 5 cylinders? I was told to get a Jasper motor. Do y'all know if they're worth the money? ($2300). I would like to stay with a 258.

if you don't mind the downtime, i'd pull that one and have it rebuilt. a local shop should be able to do it for at least half of that price, maybe less. just check around. where are you located?

Before you go pulling I would do a little more testing. Your compression problem may not be a block problem but rather a valve problem. If you have a burnt valve then you could be losing compression that way. That would be much easier and cheaper to fix.
Here is how you tell. Take your spark plug out and pour a little oil (about a spoon full) in the cylinder and turn it over a few times. Insert your gague and turn motor over, if the compression rises some then that will tell you that your piston rings are bad. The oil will help compensate for the slack in the rings. If the compression does not rise then you will have a burnt or sticking valve.
I would definitely try this first.

I didn' t write that "sthingy" word above. It is supposed to be s p o o n , but the board won't let me write that word without space - it converts the word to "sthingy". Someone try writing that word s p o o n without any spaces and see if it happens to you so that I won't continue to think that I am crazy.
Maybe i am.

To answer your question about the Jasper motor, they are awesome and take great pride in building them. I have been in a Jasper engine shop at the Nascar Technical Institute in Mooresville, NC and seen it first hand. However, I could only dream a buying one of those motors. I would have a local shop do the rebuild if it is necessary. I have done business with Columbus Engine and Crank and have been pleased withtheir work. They will build a motor to your specs at a reasonable price.
I just bought a Willys from a guy who said that he had a 258 sitting in his shop that was running - don't know if he will sell it or what a price would be - shoot me a personal message if you want that info.

SPOON Yeah, Rob... you are just crazy... That is kinda like Jason's email... it is listed as Babthingy.com on the board... if you know his email you can figure out the reason. Dang censors!

There is an ad in today's tradewinds for parts for a CJ-5. It includes a 258 that is pretty much complete, plus some other parts. All for $200, it might be worth checking out if you are looking for a motor.
