I need to get my fuel gauge working. The gauge is new. I do not know if it is the sending unit or the wiring. Anyone have any experiance with this.

I don't really have any experience to speak of with Jeep gauges... but I would bet its the sending unit... I read somewhere that they are known to have problems... and the fuel gauge in my brothers 78 cj did the same thing.

A good way to determine if the gauge or the sending unit is bad is to find the wire running to the sending unit on top of the gas tank. Disconnect it or cut it and touch it to ground like the frame rail or something. If the gauge moves the opposite direction from where it is originally sitting, then it would most likely be the sending unit is bad. If the gauge does not move then you have a wiring problem or bad gauge. I just replaced my sending unit in an 80 CJ7 - got the unit from www.4wd.com it was on my doorstep in 2 days. Hope this helps. be careful too when you buy aftermarket guages. MOST of them (especially the cheaper ones) won't work with the OEM sending units. Been there, done that. If you order one, specifically ask the person if they will work with the OEM senders. It will be included in the documentation they have access to, but may be in the fine print.
