I'm planning on having my engine rebuilt this summer. After I get it rebuilt I want to upgrade to propane. My jeep isn't a daily driver, so I figured it would be a cool upgrade. Is there anything special I should do to the engine (i.e. raise the compression ratio) while rebuilding the motor to get it ready for propane. Where's the best place to get propane conversion kits. I've seen some at places on the internet. Will gas companies have kits. I want to put two forklift tanks in the bed of my jeep behind the cab. Will they fit between the fenderwells. Thanks

A lot of gas companies will have used parts that you can purchase, or find an old farm truck running it and buy the whole truck.
I am running the Impco 425 and I think that is what Craig is running. I have been very pleased with it. The best I can tell it is strictly a propane system and not one that you can switch back and forth from propane to gas on the run. Is this an option that you want to do?
As far as the motor, propane does like a higher compression ratio. However, I am not sure I would do it if I weren't sure whether or not I was going to run propane exclusively. It would be a shame to build a hot motor and decide that propane was too inconvenient or hard to get filled up and then have to run a super high octane gas that is pretty expensive these days. Speaking of that, if you run propane on the road you have to register and be certified to do so I think. You might want to check on that.
I would also suggest a 4 bbl intake for the motor, because most propane kits use the Holley 4 bbl bore. I have a Clifford 4 bbl intake on my 258 and it appears that everything could bolt right up.
Propane is awesome, but has its pro's and cons just like anything else. There is plenty of info. on the Internet if you do little searching around. Pirate4x4.com has a technical article on it as well.

i'm a bit late, but the propane is a good mod. if you don't mind planning for your fill ups. i wouldn't go back to gas now that i've got it though. from what i've read, you can get more power from propane with a higher compression ratio engine because the 'pane is 110 octane. i got my stuff from brent over at the dowdle gas shop in columbus. they have a few more 425 mixers, vff30 lock offs, and model E regulators. brent will treat you right. the forklift tanks weren't going to give me enough range, but they should fit in your jeep. check out www.patooyee.com for one of the best sites on propane around. it is very informative

I brought this thread back up top cuz I have some questions... first, does Brent still have any mixers and what does he get for them? second, I found a kit with everything but the tank locally... is $200 just fair, or a pretty good deal?
