it was way out of time. like 15-20 degrees, but i set it to factory specs. 5 btdc and i cranks right up but now this started..i have been told a valve could be stuck or the carb could be bad..the carb i just got from autozone not to long ago, but it would not be the first time i got a bad part..

have you taken the valve cover off to see what is going on? could be a stuck valve I guess... maybe one of these other guys with more knowledge will chime in.

Is this motor a 6 cyl or v8? Why did it get out of time in the first place and does it do backfire constantly or just when you rev up. What kind of carb is it? It kinda sounds like an intake valve not seating very well. I would run a compression check to see if the valves are seating well. I have a couple of those gauges if you need to borrow one. Something else that drove me absolutely crazy till I figured it out. I had a chevy motor that had a vibration dampener behind the crankshaft pulley. The timing marks are on the outside ring. Due to age and so forth the rubber dampener slipped on the outside ring and thus the timing marks were about 20 degrees off. Talking about scratching your head. If it only does it at high rpm's then there may be an issue with the advanced timing on the distributor. Is this the CJ5 that you just painted? This problem may be too bad to fix so you should just let me have it so it won't worry you too much

it has a 304 and it just started it on my way down to the meeting at christy's...it jumped time right after i got it running for the first time, probobly in march or so, so i replaced the chain and had timed it but i checked it a couple weeks ago because it was so hard to carnk and it was way out of time, so i set it again..

That is a little odd that it is just shifting time on you. Maybe something is not tightening down. Is the bracket that holds your distributor in good shape? Sometimes they will bottom out and you think that it is clamping good, but all you are doing is tightening up on the block. Another thing to notice would be the bearings in the distributor. If they are bad, they could move around on you. I have 2 AMC distributors lying around if you need them. One is complete and the other is for parts.

well, i finally got it all back together with a new set of pushrods, all of them were either bent or broke, and a new throttle cable and it runs like a champ..it moves pretty good for an old jeep..next headlights.
