In my Cj7 I've got a 325hp 350, and I'm on my 2nd T4 and it's already had it's first rebuild. I guess I'm a little heavy on the foot.. I've heard that the Ax-15 is a much sturdier tranny, but wondered if anyone had mated the two in a 7?

the ax-15 is a little sturdier, but its still a medium duty transmission and I wouldn't put it behind 325 hp. Why not go with a GM tranny? The SM465 would be good or an NV4500 if you wanted overdrive. Plus you would have a much lower first gear in either of these...

Ok, I'll start looking at those...what about transfer cases, and I think I have the AMC 20 rear end, I'd love something better, but would I be able to Mate either of those gm trannies to that setup?

I am running an AX-15 and I can tell that its life is going to be kinda short with my stock engine (4.0) and 33" tires. I am hearing new popping sounds everyday. I am just waiting for either the trans or the motor to go out so that I may add a much beefier drivetrain. If automatic is an option, you can get a completely rebuilt Th350 or 700R4 from AutoZone (if you trust that) for around $800. I certainly don't want to knock your idea, but you have a man of a motor in that Jeep and if you don't want to keep blowing trannys then I would step it up so that you can start blowing axles and so forth. :-)

Woohoo! I've never blown those before! Hehe. Yah I think I'd like to stick to manual, I'm just more comfortable with a manual setup, but I'm ......let's just say less mechanically inclined than most of you guys here, so a swap that's relatively easy is key in my book I think I have the amc 20 rear end, which is very hard to find parts for btw, and I think I have the dana 20 transfer case. Is that an ok setup for the nv4500? Of course someday I'd love to go with a beefier rear, but cost is a big factor. Btw, how is west point treating you Rob?

you may want to check on the tcase you have. I believe the T4 came with a D300 from the factory. What model is your Jeep? If it is a '79 or before, it probably came with the dana 20 from the factory, but if you have a T4 transmission, I would bet you have a D300 tcase. You can find the info you need to identify it and also what is needed for the transmission swaps here: www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/knowledge_gateway.htmThe 300 is a good transfer case too. I am putting one in my Jeep. Novak doesn't list an adapter for the nv4500 to the dana 20, but you could use the sm465. The 300 could be adapted to either transmission.

Oh and if you need parts for the amc 20, I have a complete rear end I would put on you pretty cheap...

I may take you up on that....I'll have to check with the wife first Oh...and I think you're right. I think it is the 300. Thanks for the link btw, that'll help out a lot.

How hard would the clutch linkage on a SM465 be to adapt to a CJ? All of the clutch linkage issues is the reason that I suggest an automatic. All I have ever done is pull standards to replace with juice boxes.

All I have ever done is pull standards to replace with juice boxes. I know of a couple guys down here running them in YJ's so I am sure it could be done, but don't know what is involved... I could find out and take pics...

How hard would the clutch linkage on a SM465 be to adapt to a CJ? ... We adapted an SM420 to our CJ bellhousing, so the stock clutch linkage worked just fine. The SM465 is a very similar transmission.

I've got a SM465 that's had a granny low 1st put in it that I might be interested in parting with. Had it to use in my K5 that I sold and don't think I'm gonna try to use it in my CJ-7.

I don't know if I want a granny low or not, I'm mostly street, and casual off road.

T176, T18, or T15 is your best bet. direct swaps with your setup now. I have a T15 3 speed in my Scrambler with a well built 401 and it handles the power easily. I would go with a T176 if you want a 4 speed, ot T18 if you want a 4 speed with a low.

I always have been a fan of the NV4500, for a stick. Ever though of going to an auto. I have a 700r4 around here somewhere.
