OK, here's the story. Had a lifter tick on pass. side on the 304 for bout a year now. Was fairly light but kept getting louder. Finally decided to go get some valve cover gaskets and take a look. Day before I get to it, I get an additional much louder tick while on the way to work. Not wanting to hurt anything, I towed the jeep back home and pulled the cover. Found two broken rocker bridges on passenger side(one missing a good chunk). Ordered bridges, which apparently now come as a three piece kit (two pivots and one stamped steel bridge) as opposed to the all-in-one stock aluminum bridge/pivots, or you can get a whole rocker kit which comes with two rockers, two pivots and a bridge. This is what I got from O'Reilly's. Decided to replace all 4 sets on pass side while I had the cover off. When I removed the rockers, two of the pushrods (different cylinders) were missing one pivot ball on the rocker end. So, back to Oreilly's to get 8 pushrods to replace all of those as well. Now to the problem..... Since replacing these, I am not getting hardly any oil up into the rocker assy (an occasional dribble). Found this out as I started getting a squeaking sound and upon removing the cover again, basically found dry rocker arms. I don't have a service manual; only the Haynes book. But, it appears the only oil source is up the pushrod and through the hole in the pushrod end of the rocker. I have verified that the pushrods are not clogged and changed the oil twice since the replacement of the rocker assy. I've got decent oil pressure according to the guage (60 cold and about 35 or so when hot and idling) and lack of any problems on the driver's side would seem to rule out oil pump problems. Is there anything else to check/try/sacrifice? I'm afraid I'm gonnna have to resort to pulling the intake to get at the lifters. I'm trying not to let this keep me from going to Hot Springs in two weeks but I don't know what else to try. Help?

Jim, you have about ruled out about everything except a lifter. The only thing between it and the oil pump should be the passage that the oil runs through. I hate to say it, but pulling them may be your only next resort. However, I would not let it stop me from going to Hot Springs. The "plowboy" like myself would get some heavy duty grease and coat those push rod ends and rockers arm down and get a good ride out of it.
I am certainly not the AMC expert, so you should seek a second opinion.

Well, I tried running some Gunk brand Motor Flush through it before the second oil change but it didn't do much good. Haven't seen seafoam anywhere. Soneone on the SMJC board suggested it might just be the new pushrods aren't meshing up with the worn lifters. So I went by O'Reilly's today and ordered 8 new lifters to take care of the passenger side for now. They'll be here Friday. If that doesn't do the trick, then I might just lube everything up real good for Hot Springs. I know for a fact that 90W gear oil will last a day. (Did that after first oil change to try and prime things.) Besides if something happens at Hot Springs, I kinda been wanting a reason to find a 360 to freshen up and throw in. -jim

Don't you just love it when you conquer a problem like that!

Absolutely!! Especially, when I don't break something else in the process.
