We did this exact same thing to my CJ, i think johnny said you talked to him a little about it. I think he said you were putting the same Powertrax no-slips in? It was just like you said shimming to get the right gear mesh took a little time, and we did cut the bearings off the old axles with a torch to get the backing plate and all. i did the lockers afterward and they went real smooth since we already knew how thick to shim. I'll PM you my number, if you run into any trouble on the front give me a call, we might have had the same problem!?

Yes...I talked to Johnny about what ya'll had done. He was gonna come by last Friday (I think), but had something else come up. It's not a "2-3 hour install" like they lead you to believe !!
Now, I'm pondering even doing the fronts myself. Holman's , in Columbus, said they would put my stuff in for $250.....I'm going to ask him once more to be sure, then I may let 250 FLY !!!!

Well, the rear is COMPLETE!!!
I've been driving it around the last couple of days, and everything seems to be in order. MAN !! WHat a Difference!! I've got 3:73 gears in my work truck, so I was thinking along those lines. Not even close. My speedo is way off, but I bet my top speed isn't over 45mph!! That's at @2400rpm ! I put it in LOW and in 1st gear.....I can walk faster than that!! Now, I'm wondering if I went TOO LOW? I'm thinking bigger tires anyway....so I'll probably do that and see what it's like after that. I've heard some of you talk about changing your ratio at the transfer case...would this be an alternative to raise my gearing?
Overall, though, I'm very pleased with the modification. I have new respect for those that work on rearends....or front ends....whichever the case may be!!

I had a guy ,that works for Jeep in Amory and builds race cars ,put my rear together for $100.00.He woul probably do your front when you need it done.

I've heard some of you talk about changing your ratio at the transfer case...would this be an alternative to raise my gearing? Blasphemy!! There is never such a thing as TOO low! JK. Seriously, check out this link and compare your old gearset to you new one. www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.htmlIt should give you an idea of where your rpms are now versus what they were with the old setup. I also found one of those mobile police radar units that tells you your speed and drove by several times at different speeds to see what it said. Bigger tires would drop the RPM's back down real quick. I'm running my stock setup of 3.54 on 33" tires. With my original 235/75R15's I overheated when I got above 65 (turning more than 2600 RPM's) so bigger tires dropped it down for the highway(2343 RPM's at 65). If I go with 35's I'm thinking about going up to 4.10's which should take me back close to my original RPM range(about 2550 RPM's at 65). The kits that change the gear ratio in the transfer case are designed to swap out the "low" gearset so you move slower on the trails at a given RPM. The "high" gearset still turns at a 1:1 ratio for highway driving. Good luck on the front. I didn't think it was near as hard as the model 20 because the pinion doesn't have to be pressed in and out and no pinion crush sleeve to worry about messing up. Just keep in mind that going to 3.73 in the Dana 30, you're gonna need a new carrier for 3.73 and above ratios. -jim

I thought my stock carrier would work with 3:73's? Damn. What hits? Where did you get yours? I had to mill the rear one, so it really doesn't suprise me if it doesn't "exactly fit".
Glad you included your rpm's, too. That makes me feel better about what I'm turning.
BC....give me the contact info and I'll give your bud a call. I've already got $50 from my buddy to go in on it !!!

There are two "stock" carriers. On a Dana 30 one is for 3.54 and lower gear ratios and one for 3.73 and higher. Do a search on "carrier break" and you'll get all the info you need. Basically the only difference is how far the ring gear mounting surface is from the centerline of the pinion gear. Since I'm still running 3.54's I haven't had to change carriers yet but I will if I go to 4.10's in the 30. I'm betting you won't be able to mill down to fix the problem. You could check around or look in junk yards to find a Dana 30 carrier that already has the higher gearset in it. You might want to check on your locker also, because depending on the brand, there may be a different one for the 3.73 and up carrier.
