I went out this mornin and cranked up the jeep and started down the road to enjoy my day off, and I started to hear this noise coming from the rear possibly at the driver's side tire. The noise basically sounds like a train when it's moving....it's a strange sound, and not being terribly mechanically inclined, I crawled underneath, and see no glaring problems...things loose or that sort, the drive shaft and u-joints all seem good, .....does anyone know or have any suggestions as to what it might be?

If it is coming from one side then it may be axle bearing on that side. Sometimes you can remove the rear tire and the brake drum and move attempt to move the axle shaft up and down. If there is any play up and down the bearing is bad. Usually the seal will go out pretty quick and oil leakage will become evident.
I have experienced a pinion bearing go out and it resonates to the end of the axle tubes and is hard to listen for. Just a word of caution - if it is an axle bearing there is potential for that axle shaft and tire to come out from under the Jeep as it is going down the road.
Drop by the house one day and we could give it a look.

I may have a little time tomorrow afternoon. My wife has a meeting and I will have my 3 year old, but we could pull the Jeep in the garage and keep an eye on him just fine. The tenative due date is June 1st. My sympathy pains are starting to be more than I can handle.

Well here's a little sympathy from yours truly. I don't get off of work until 7:00 tomorrow, so maybe we can look at it sometime. I'm in no real hurry. Thanks for the offer though, I could use someone with some mechanical knowledge seeing as mine is limited , basically if a hammer don't fix it....... well you get the idea. Al

Well, after getting someone to ride with me, and help listen, it seems that the noise is on both sides.....it sounds a little like a buzzing noise...and it buzzes in time with the speed...so buzz....buzz....buzz....buzzz..buzz..buzz
the faster I go the more often it buzzes and so on and so forth....anyway....
What do you think?

Well, I think I've figured out that the rear end is dry......I'm going to attemp to pull off the back cover and see what I can learn.....anyone who knows where the fill plug is is welcome to chime in......But, if all else fails.....a hammer ;D

well it looks like someone beat me to the hammer idea.....a couple of the teeth on the pilot gear in the rear have cracked off, and another looks like it's on it's last root...so to speak....Anybody know anything about rear ends? I'd like to do the work myself, but as I've already said, my mechanical inclination has gone as far as it can...and a little beyond if I do say so....

Al sorry to hear about your rear. I wouldn't suggest setting them up on your own as it is a little tricky. I have done a few, but they have been on trail-only rigs and front ends. I would not think twice about setting up a front end, because it is not going to see continuous duty on the road if the hubs are unlocked. I have done 3 rears and one turned out great and the other 2 hummed really loud on the road. One is in my CJ7 now. I am going to run it till it don't. 4wheelparts.com may be a good place to start looking for gears. There is a store in Memphis. JCWhitney and 4wd.com will have them as well. I will PM you the information on a guy in West Point that may be able to set it up for you.

Anybody know any tricks to identifying what rear end I've got?

If everything is in stock form, you should have an AMC 20 rear axle. Look at the rear diff cover and if it completely round with no indentions it is a 20. I think it is a narrow track if I remember correctly.

That certainly looks like it. I'll crawl under this evening and see if I can't find that code or read the tag on the front. Tnanks!!! Al
