Good Luck on the CJ5 overhaul. My first Jeep to restore was a 75 CJ5. I had a 360 AMC w/ T15 3 speed and Dana 20 t-case. The engine had a Lunati Cam, Edlebrock Performer intake, 750 Edl carb and a DUI Distributor. Probably the item that made the most difference in performance to me was the DUI distributor. It is a bit pricey ($500 I think), but it brought my 360 to life. It is also a one wire distributor similar to a GM.
I bought the Edelbrock Carb before I started trail riding. It did not do well on inclines and such. Flat land mud riding it is fine, but I would recommend the Truck Avenger carb by Holley for better perfornace offroad. I personally have not run it, but have heard good reviews. It is strictly going to be a trail rig then I would recommend propane.

thanks for the input rsmith, i was looking at the avenger carb myself. i have even talked with a few people that have it on the rides. they say it is great. it seems that you know alot about the older jeeps. maybe i could get ya to help me out one day when i run into some trouble, haha.

at the moment i have dropped the gas tank, striped the inside of everything(removed seats, dash, steering column). my next job is to remove the locking hubs, gas and brake lines, and hopefully, if i can find an engine lift remove the engine. i am removing alot of un-needed stuff from it b/c i dont want it to be a daily driver but i want it to be something i can take out when i want to. prolly gonna remove hubs, gas/brake lines, and other stuff behind the dash thoughout this week.

i'm stuck in the process of tearing the jeep down. i cannot see how the brake calipers come off for the front. i think there is a pin that is holding them on to the caliper mount but i cannot see where it is. if anyone knows how to remove brake calipers on the 78 cj5 pls let me know.......

I can't remember off the top of my head, but I thought I remember an allen head bolt sticking in from the back. That my be a Chevy that I am thinking of, but it should have some bolt holding them on. If you have taken those out then convince it a little with a hammer.

there is an allen head bolt on the bottom back of the caliper, i removed it. i think that is what is holding it on also. maybe the caliper is just rusted on and needs some of the down south convincing, hahah!

Cool! I'm slowly working on a 78 CJ5 as well. Perhaps we can share info sometime? Mine currently has a 258 but I got a 304 to swap in. I'm gonna keep mine as a daily driver though, so I'm not going as rad as you on this one.
