Hey guys, I'm getting my 8.8 ready to go in my jeep and need my 5.13's and ARB installed. I feel it is something I could do myself here at home but it would take weeks considering I'd be looking at the internet then doing a step then back to the internet for the next step. After all of that I still don't know if I'd be comfortable considering it'd be my first gear install. I don't have an issue paying someone a little to do it but I would like to be taught also along the way so I would feel more confident next time. Does anyone here know how to do gears and would you be willing to show me the ropes along the way? I'm also worried about the ARB install as I've heard there isn't a lot of room inside the diff for the copper pipe with the larger ring gear. I've heard of people running the copper pipe up where the old electrical connector was on the 8.8 Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks everyone. Zach
I'm in Columbus at the AF Base and could bring everything somewhere if that would help.

I have no experience with ARBs, but I've done about 5 gear installs. Want to do a gear install party? I have Mark's shop here in Starkville and we can do it like we did my Dana 44 for the M38. You could provide pizza and there's probably enough people with "expertise" around here to do it. I'm sure with the instruction manual on the ARB it wouldn't be that bad to install. Is the 8.8 totally empty, or does it have the old gears in it still? Do you have a gear install kit (with all the new pinion and carrier bearings and seals)? -RC

It's still got the old gears in it but I could pull those before hand if need be. I would have no trouble providing pizza and "beverages" for everyone. I've got everything ready to go. ie:install kit etc... but the experience is where I'm lacking. I've also got the TJ brackets that need to be placed and welded on and a Super 88 kit from Superior if we wanted to do it all at the same time if people wanted to see how those installed. If we were to do the brackets I'd probalby just tack them in place till I got home and could get the axle under the jeep to make sure it all fit before I fully burned them in place.

I have recently scored an 8.8 for my TJ. Let me know how I can help. I would love the experience. RC if your shop is crowded with your project I will be glad to host. Just let me know.

Guys, when is a good time for everyone? I'm off tomorrow and Monday but I'll be gone all next weekend. Lets try to get this planned so everyone that wants to come and learn from it can arrange their schedules.

I'm free most Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays (and weekends). I've got room in the shop for an axle project, so I can host it-- don't worry about it Rob. You can do the regear in an evening after work if you had all your ducks in a row. If you can take apart the axle and get the old bearings off and make them "setup" bearings, it makes life a lot easier and the gear install quicker. This is where I ran into trouble on my Dana 44 and the regear ended up taking a few days. Basically you take off both carrier bearings and hog out the centers so they don't require a press to take on and off, and then do the same on the old pinion races as well. I can help with that if you want. AubrurnAviator-- can you PM me your phone number? I'll call you talk about the setup bearings. -RC

Thanks to RC we got the ARB and the 5.13's installed in the 8.8. Now it's time to burn on the TJ brackets install the Super 88 kit and get it under the jeep. Rsimth, if you have any 8.8 questions or would like a stock pair of 8.8 shafts or open carrier let me know. I also have the set of 4.10's that came out of it that with a little work would be a good set.

It was a good time, and a good learning experience. I'll post pics of all our pinion shim trials here pretty soon. -RC
