I'm starting on the axles on my M38 project. I've got a Dana 44 front and AMC20 rear from a waggoneer, and they have the stock gears in them (2.73 I think). I'm wanting to regear it before I stick them under there and start the suspension. Since this project will just be driven around town and on trails, I don't need the "super quiet high quality" gears, but then I don't want to get cheap ones that break either. What brands should I be looking at? Opinions? I'm keeping the lockouts on the front, so I'm thinking I'll put like a aussie locker in the front. I'd like a selectable locker for the rear, so I'm looking at using one of the electric ones, like the auburn or the eaton. Opinions on that? Thanks for the help. -RC

I wouldn't worry with a selectable locker for the rear. Go Detroit for good street manners and strength. Once you get used to a Detroit's quirks, driving with it becomes second nature.
I'd use East Coast Gear Supply or Randy's, who offers two gearsets depending on the quality you want. So Yukon, Alloy USA, Spicer, Superior, Ten Factory, and Richmond are a few you can usually trust.

Well I appreciate the info. I think I've decided on Yukon gears, and I think I'll get an OX locker for the rear. I hear what you're saying about getting a Detroit, but if I'm already going to spend over $500 on a locker, I might as well spend a few hundred more and get a selectable one. I really don't want to sacrifice the turning radius or street manners with this thing.
Does anyone want to have a gear install party in the next few weeks? Rob? Craig? -RC

Sorry so short. On my phone.

I won't be the "expert" either, but you know I'd be glad to help.

Ok. Well if someone's got to be the expert, I guess it'll be me. I actually have a Jeep shop manual that covers those axles. I'm ordering the stuff soon, so party in a few weeks? Rob-- what's a good weekend that the shop will be free? I'd love to use the press instead of beating the new bearings on. -RC

...so party in a few weeks?... A few weeks??? Your goal to have it rolling is in one more week!
I'll volunteer to be the expert, as long as everyone promises not to ask exactly what I'm the expert at!
