The 'ol CJ has got to be towed home tomorrow. I've lost all gears except 3rd. Earlier today, I couldn't seem to find a gear during a down-shift. Then, coming to a stop from 3rd, I couldn't get it into any gear and the shifter just swings all around like there aren't any stops.
On to the case at hand, does this sound like just a possible linkage problem OR time for a rebuild/replace?
Is it just as easy to find a good replacement than to deal with a full rebuild?
Is there a better choice for a direct bolt-in manual shift? I'd like to stick to something with an over-drive.
I swear the only time that I have serious auto issues is when it's cold and raining!!! Thanks for any input!

Probably isn't any external linkage but it does sound like your shifter is broken and has become disconnected from the shift forks. You could probably just pull the top cover and find the missing/broken parts. Quadratec has an exploded diagram that can guide you along. I'd bet the problem is somewhere along between part #7 and #20 or the pin #18 could have sheared off letting the shifter slide back and forth without engaging anything. -jim

Now that is what I like about this site! I second Jim's idea - pull that cover and it should tell you the story. That's the solution that I'm crossing my fingers for.
I looked on Quadratec and only saw the main case/gears. I'll look again for the cover/shifter/forks.
I haven't ever pulled the shifter cover from the floor tunnel so, can the trans cover be pulled from inside the cab?
Seems like a good ? to ask before I drop the whole thing on the ground.
Thanks a-lot guys!!

Well, I feel like an idiot after going back to Quadratec. Obviously I was in a hurry clicking on the first item with T-176 on it.
P.S. This is way off subject. How do you reference a previous post.

YOu should be able to pull the top off of the tranny without dropping it. That has been the case on other trannys in CJ's that I have dealt with. Someone else may have to address the reference thing that you asked about. My Internet filter at work blocks about everything. I am lucky to see a post and reply. All of the pictures and link are blocked out. I would be stabbing in the dark to tell you. That's the solution that I'm crossing my fingers for. ... How do you reference a previous post. In the top right corner of the post you want to reference, there should be a button that says "Quote". Click on it and add what you want to say under the quoted information in the Message block.

Well, I've just had a revelation. I don't have the T-176. It's a T-4. None-the-less, I figure that it's still going to be the same type problem. I was concerned that every shifter handle that I saw for a t-176 looked different than mine. Mine is a 2-piece handle. I just pulled the inside cover and I obviously wasn't looking at the cover of a T-176.

Well I finally got a chance to dig a little deeper and found the demise of my gear shifting. Apparently there had been a problem here before. The base plate had broken across the middle and was botch welded. It has now broken along the edge of that weld and the single bolt at the back was missing and the two along the middle were quite loose. So when I tried to shift forward the whole thing just lifted out of the housing. The plan that I've come up with is to get a thin (maybe 1/8) plate cut out in the same pattern as the base plate and basically re-skin the original plate and weld the two together.

Sounds like a plan. It does look pretty mangled.

Changed the plan just a little. Guess I've probably got the first bomb-proof T-4 shifter. Ended up cutting off the old mounting plate completely and made a new one out of 1/4 plate and welded the shifter "cup" in.

Wow! Sweet. That should do the trick and looks much stronger than trying to piece the old stuff back together. Good Job.
