Ok ,I have a new shaft. Now who can tell me all I need to know about taking the old one out and replacing it with the new one?I have an old 249 I was looking at to get a rough idea.I feel like I am going to be short some tools. How does the shaft actually come out of the gears and stuff?

You will need to take the back half of the transfer case off. You can do this under the Jeep. You will have to remove the front output yoke and I think it's 8 or 10 bolts that hold the back half on, I think they are 13mm, and there is one 10mm 12 point on top. then when you get it on a bench it will be easier to see what to do. there will be a snap ring that is a pain to get off. I just replaced the back half of my transfer case yesterday and had to get the synchro off the old shaft and put it on the shaft in the new one.

It doesn't have holes like a normal snap ring, but I used snap ring pliers with some angled tips and a flat screwdriver and just wrestled with it for a while. It is possible, it is just one of those things that takes 3 hands. I still have the old back half on the bench and I can take some pics for you tomorrow if you want.

Thanks, that will be a big help.I can look at the 249 ,and it is about the same.I hope to have mine broke apart tomorrow.I can see where that snap ring will be a problem.I was hoping for a miracle cure though. You said that you took the back off of yours while its still in the Jeep?Is that easier than taking the whole tcase out?

It was pretty easy, I just pulled the bolts out with an impact and an extension, then pulled the front yoke off and pryed the back half off... went back on just as easy.... A lot lighter than trying to get that whole case back up in place too.
