Ok, I bought an '87 4Runner several months ago. I rebuilt the engine, got it put in, and tested to see if I was getting fuel before trying to start.
I didn't have fuel, so I checked the fuel pump relay, and it was fine. After dropping the tank, I discovered gas that had been sitting there for nearly 6 years, so the tank was rusted. I had the tank dipped, then I sealed it.
After getting the pump and sending unit back in today, I hooked up the wiring, poured a gallon of gas in and turned the key on.
I heard silence...the pump isn't running. I hooked up both pos. and neg. wires on the pump before dropping it in the tank.
Anyone see something I'm overlooking?

I finally figured out the problem after getting a better understanding of how Toyota's fuel system works. The pump does not turn on with the ignition in the on position. The pump only has power during starting and while running.
When the air flow meter opens during one of those conditions, power goes to the pump. The system can be tricked by opening the air flow meter while the key is in the on position. I did that today, and, as soon as I opened the meter, fuel pumped out of the unhooked line all over the ground. I was elated. Problem solved after my initial ignorance.
