I've been working a little along the way to get this thing up and going. The first thing was to clean it from top to bottom. I spent $30 at the car wash pressure washing mold and vacuuming the interior.
Then I gutted the interior and threw the carpet away, which was so covered in rodent urine it would nearly make you gag. I ordered new carpet for the passenger area from stockinteriors.com; they claim to make their own stuff, but they shipped me ACC carpet. Whatever.
I rented a RugDoctor w/ upholstery attachment and shampooed/steam cleaned the seats after soaking in some enzymatic urine smell eliminator. Seats came out great with no smell anymore.
The next weekend, I pulled the engine/trans./t-case out in one piece to find out what made the engine blow. The no. 1 rod bearing was burned up, taking out the crankshaft with it. After trying to hone the cylinders, I decided to have the block bored and install new pistons.
After trips to a couple different junkyards, I had some misc. interior pieces I was missing and a new (used) crankshaft.
I disassembled the block all the way, then took the pieces to Tupelo Engine Rebuilders for machining. They're supposed to finish Tuesday, then I can put the engine back together.
In between that, I rented a 2500 psi. hot water pressure washer and attacked the oil and grease that covered the engine compartment and under the body. After four hours solid of spraying I had a spotless 4runner. I also cleaned the whole drivetrain while I had the hot water capability. If you need to remove a lot of oil, go rent of these. It has a kerosene heating element and will really do a number on oil and grease.
After cutting out a 4"x4" rusted place under the driver's seat and making/welding in a patch panel, I used POR-15's Metal Ready to convert any surface rust then primed the floor. The primer dried in about 5 minutes with the temperature, so I got to work installing the carpet and seats. I'm about to go out and finish that up if I can find my bolts for the shifter cover.
I'll get some pics next weekend of the refurb'd interior.
