A guy has an old fj40 he may want to sell near me. Craig, a few years ago you were looking at one. What ever happened to it. Did you buy it? I was just wondering if anyone has heard what these things are worth. I don't know anything about these toyotas, so any information would be helpful.

I bought a TLC a few years ago, but it was too far gone to do anything with. I sold the windshield frame, hood, and grill off it and junked the rest. I did not buy the other ones I've looked at recently.
If the fj40 is running and driving with not TOO much rust, and he's reasonable, then go for it.
Buying an fj40 that needs an engine rebuild can really hurt the pocketbook b/c they are very expensive to rebuild. What year? Later than '78 IIRC will have disc brakes. PS not until 82 I think for some reason. Can't really remember about the PS. The most common rust spots are floor pans, rockers, under the gas tank, and under the ambulance doors. Cool Cruisers makes really good repro. patch panels for all of those spots plus much more.
The engine will either be an F or 2F; the latter has more power. The t-cases are stout up to 38s and you can easily swap in an SM420 to get a granny gear. GM Saginaw PS is also pretty painless to do on fj40s, as is a SOA. Check out ih8mud.com for tech info. about swapping, stock specs, and the forums for pics and rigs of all flavors.
How much does he want for it?
Forgot to add that I actually just called about one this afternoon...weird.

Craig thanks for the informaiton. I knew that you would know all about them.
I did a little research last night and found that these things are not cheap. I looked at one site and they had some on there for sale. The lowest was like 12000 and the highest restored original was 33000!! I did not know they were worth that much.
As far as price on this one, I don't know. I am sure it will be above 6k though. He is the original owner, it only has 32000 original miles, and it has always been shedded. We just saw it pulled out of the shop, so we figured he wanted to get rid of it. I have not talked to the guy yet or even looked at it too closely. My dad looked at it and he thinks it is at least a 79 model. The guy we talked to said he had mentioned selling it, but he did not know anything about it.
Yeah that is kind of weird, but it was just good timing. What kind of price is on the one you are looking at, and what model is it?

The one I called about is a 72 for $1500...it's not cherry like the one you found though. If you want the contact info. for this one, send me a PM. I can send you a pic on the cell phone of the 72. There is a demand for them now, although I think it really isn't justified. But if people will pay it, then why not. The one you found sounds like a good deal if you can get it for 6K. I don't know everything about them, but I do read too much about 4 wheel drive stuff
