Well since I've been mudriding the ZJ I've been wanting to take the carpet out. I hate getting the carpet wet and muddy and then it smelling for a week. I want to leave it in for long trips though, so I've been thinking of a way to have the best of both worlds. The carpet is all one piece between the front and rear seat, so in order to get it out you have to take the seats and the center console out. Today was a nice day outside, so I decided to rip it out. Chad was bored, so I invited him in on the fun. Here's what we got accomplished so far:

Here's the muddy carpet. The reason I want to remove it. After taking the driver's seat out: Chad's working hard.

No seats and center console is out: The sidewalk's getting crowded with the Jeep interior. Chad: "Hey look! I found a quarter!!"

To my surprise, I found out I had a puddle of water under the passenger side carpet. The A/C drip line backed up and it flooded the floor. Here you can see where I cut my carpet. The seam is under the seat, so it shouldn't be noticeable. Seats all out and carpet is too.

Here's another one for Chad. All out. Hope it doesn't rain. I put the interior back in. Much better now without carpet.

Tonight I will finish up cutting the carpet, cleaning it, and I'll reinstall it tomorrow. I need to fix that A/C drip line too. Thanks Chad for the help. -RC

Beautiful. I'm going to spill a gallon of Coke in it just because I can.

There is no fun like tearing stuff apart. A rubber floor mat would be nice if you could find one. You do need some kind of floor mat because I bet that floor gets pretty hot on long drives. The musty smell was probably caused by the plugged a/c drain.

Yeah the floor does get hot on long drives. On my Cherokee I used to leave the carpet out and the tranny hump in the middle used to cook the side of my leg on long trips. I drove the ZJ around a little tonight with no carpet in it. It sounds like a school bus on the inside. I can't believe how much noise the carpet blocks. I definitely will be cutting and installing the carpet back soon. I don't think anyone's gonna want to ride in it otherwise. -RC

OK i got done cutting it. While a group of us were watching a movie in the Hull Hall lobby I cut the edges of the carpet (since the edges are under the plastic trim) and vacuumed it to clean it. By cutting the edges off I can now take it out and put it in without having to take the trim off and tuck the carpet under. Before trim and vacuum: After:

my zj ac line stopped up also.you can drill a small hole in the condensation resavoir and run a coat hanger through to the drip line and then plug the hole up.I had to do this to mine about three times. And by the way,I have a 249 t case I'll give you if you'll come and get it.Its good for a rebuild or parts.

I tried that trick over the Christmas break because I've had this problem before. I'm not sure I did it right....I'll take some pictures. I drilled the hole and ran the hanger through, but I don't think it was clogged. I found no indication of the line being stopped up. It's still leaking, but after looking at it, it appears that I didn't seal up the hole I drilled very well and the water's just coming out there. It's frustrating. Next time I'm in amory I'll pick up your 249, hah hah. The only thing those AWD ones are good for is the input shaft and scrap steel. -RC

RC, did you find drain plugs in the floor or not? No drain holes, but most of the floor is covered in some kind of rubberized coating. If there are drain plugs they are underneath. Chad wants me to make drain holes and then rhino line it. We'll see. -RC
