Hey, anybody locate a good writeup with pictures on building a steering system on a D44 using Chevy 1 ton TREs? It appears the only way to build your own is by buying the Poison Spyder tube inserts. Chevy TRE's are 7/8-18 which is finer than standard fine thread. Anybody have another option? What tie rod ends out there use a standard fine thread? Normal thread inserts can be found for around $2 where the poison spyder ones are $12 and I will have to have 4 of them. Which is still cheaper than buying a 7/8-18 tap probably.

What I have been doing is using the 3/4 heim joints and threading the the tubes with standard 3/4 thread taps. Drill your arms out to 3/4 and run a bolt through them.

yeah, I know I could go with heim joints, but I am not sure it would be best on a DD. But it probably would be cheaper. ...

you going inverted t? I would be curious on exactly what you are thinking on this...... you are spring over on a yj right? if so.... this might come in handy with my leafsprung xj.... here is a link to a search on "inverted t" on naxja.... www.naxja.org/forum/search.php?searchid=637059

I am actually still spring under. I do want to do an inverted t setup I think. I just don't think I want to use heim joints on a daily driver. Plus, the dana 44 I am getting is not a flat top so I can't do a true crossover steering setup. there is really no need to do a high steer either since I am spring under and the D44 tie rod will already be higher than a D30 one and somewhat protected by my springs. What I am basically looking to do is build a steering system that is like stock, just stronger. Heck, I would the stock Wagoneer steering if i had it, but I am starting from scratch. The problem is that the Chevy TRE's that everybody uses are 7/8"-18 which is finer than fine thread and having to buy a left and right hand tap in this thread is very expensive. The weld in inserts are about 12 bucks each, which is a lot cheaper I guess but it still seems like there may be a better way to do this. Also the tubing has to be 1" i.d. to use the inserts and you are looking at a 1.5" tierod to get a decent wall thickness. Also, you have to buy a tapered reamer to enlarge the holes on the knuckles and pitman arm. The cheapest one I have found is $40. Then you have to buy the Jam nuts which are $4 each. If I could find some TRE's that are the same taper as a stock Wagoneer and a normal thread pitch, I think I could work with that. Anybody know of a TRE that uses a 3/4-16 thread? What's the part # for a stock Waggy TRE?

maybe a zj tre......
You have any parts for swappin' I have the waggy steering attached to my axle..... I am going to go crossover if I can. I may consider trading off the stock steering..... unless I could figure out a good way for it to work on my xj w/springover (I don't think that is possible though)
