OK. I'm trying to figure best way to measure to get my driveshaft cut down. I can get ride-height measurement and can jack it up to get full droop measurement, but am wondering the best way to get a fully compressed measurement. With the CJ being leaf sprung, can't remove the springs to let it settle down.
Any ideas?

You should only have to get the one at ride height, then they can just put a long travel spline in it.

Well, I pulled the CV driveshaft out from the front of a Cherokee and it has about 3" of travel in it (better than the 2" in the stock CJ driveshaft) and was just planning on getting it shortened to fit the CJ's rear. Didn't really want to go through any more customization than that on a junkyard pull. I guess I could go with the two measurements and assume(yeah, right) that it won't bottom out on a full compression. Although, it does seem rare that the entire rear axle (both rear tires) would fully compress at the same time (only if I got some serious bouncing going on perhaps), so perhaps a guesstimate would be enough? Just wondering if I had more than 3" of total travel happening anyway. -jim

The few time that I have done it it has been mostly guesstimates. I will attach both ends to the yokes as they are separated and line them up and take enough out to leave about an inch or a little less on upward travel. I know this is not scientific, but it has served me well in the past. Don't sue me if you crack a t-case

i did the same when i measured for my rear.. just got a longer travel spline

Well, I got it cut down and think it will work. I got to thinking (I know, dangerous) and figured the only way that the diff would travel a large amount was when either both wheels were fully compressed or fully extended since all other times basically the axle pivots around the diff and the diff doesn't really move up or down very much overall. The only scenario that both tires would be extended that I could come up with would be if I got high centered on the xcase skid plate and I couldn't come up with a scenario where full compression of both sides of the axle would take place( unless I got to bouncing really hard). So I took the ride height length and allow about 1.25" inward and 1.75 outward. Hopefully that's good enough.
