I am restoring an original army jeep. The jeep has a 4-cyl engine, and a t-90 3 speed trans. The axles are rear: dana 44, front: dana 25. The ratio is 5.37:1, that means only about 35 mph in high! The question is what should I do with it? Any suggestions.

no, seriously, you might try to talk to John Pope there in Carrollton. He used to have several military jeeps that he restored and may even have some parts laying around. He is the one that gave me the roll bar for my cj-5.

Are you wanting to build an extreme machine or basically restore the Jeep? If you want to build an extreme machine that looks like an old Jeep, then we need to do some trading. I would not alter that M38-A1 for anything - just my opinion. I started a CJ2a build with a completely custom boxed frame with a Chevy 4.3 v6 fuel injected engine with a Dana 60 rear and high pinion Dana 44 front. The front axle is installed as well as the motor and transmission. The 700r4 automatic has a fixed yoke shorty kit installed and never wheeled. The rear axle with 3 link coil suspension is still in the process of being done. The body is sitting over to the side and has not been modified or put on yet. The grill and hood is in excellent shape. The reason I am considering getting rid of this is because I bought my wife an 80 CJ7 and I am wheeling a 75 Ford Bronco and just don't have enough time and money to support all 3 projects. My father is also looking for an old Jeep for the farm. Here are some pics: I need to move some of this stuff pretty quick, because it is in an abandoned automotive lab at my school and a new program is moving in. I have been told that my stuff needs to move out. Holler at me if you are interested in a little trade - rnsmith@ebicom.net Rob

I was only joking about the rockwells and v-8 I think he is wanting to restore it. he does have a cool willys truck that would look awesome on deuce and a halves though.
That looks like a good project you got there... what you trying to get for it?

yeah i am just wanting to keep it pretty much stock. I am just trying to decide if I should make it look like an army jeep with the olive drab or paint it a different color. The jeep was a fire dept vehicle and it was painted red and white. Most of that color is gone and you can see about 25 coats of the original army paint, which i am trying to remove with industrial paint remover. The jeep has a hardtop and doors, but I am looking for an original canvas (soft top) frame and a spare tire bracket. If anyone knows where any of this stuff is, let me know.

I really haven't thought about it much, but I will breakdown what I have in it:
4.3 chevy engine w/ 700r4 trans $450 Ford 3/4 ton axles - new u joints and bearings $400 NP 231 t-case fixed yoke shorty kit $375 Metal in frame $100 Body parts $200
I have approximately $1600 in the project so far and I would entertain a reasonable offer for the package deal or just parts of it. I have also been known to trade for something.

Got a pretty good gas tank if you need one. The sending unit even works.

I wish it wouldn't cost so much to put that 700r4 in my rig. That overdrive would be nice!

I dont know if brad knows what shape it is in. It is not rusted out anywhere. I sandblasted the outside a few years ago, and did not prime it so it has a little surface rust but i am going to sand it off. The floors have a lot of army green left on them that is peeling so it has to be removed. i am using paint remover to get them down to the bare metal to start fresh with the new paint. And yeah it does run good.

I came across a good article on restoring an M38 a couple months ago in an Off-Road Adventures magazine... I will see if I can find it. Seems like it had some places to find parts. I did a quick search on google and it looks like parts are pretty easy to find. And like I said, John Pope in Carrollton may have a pile of parts.
