SM465 w/ Novak's 1" adapter to the stock small hole Dana 18 case. After doing some research, that combo will be the shortest I can put between the rails. That way the driveshaft can be as long as possible. The SM420 is shorter by itself by a few inches, but uses a longer adapter.
I'd love to see you build a flat fender Rob. They're just neat to look at, stock or built and they can go about anywhere.
I think the 4.3 will be plenty too, especially with 5.38s and the 6.58 1st gear in the SM465. The crawl ratio will be about 87:1. Second gear should allow plenty of wheelspeed.
Propane will supply fuel.

That is going to be absolutely sweet. I can't wait to see it in action I am really upset that I cannot see your pictures. My Internet filter at work is not allowing the picture to show. It really stinks! BTW, I just went and checked on my buggy which is in storage here at my school. It is leaking trans fluid pretty bad. I guess it is crying since I haven't wheeled it any this summer.

The adapter and the gears/locker are the only big ticket items left to buy. The other stuff will nickel and dime me to death though.
Radiator, alternator, PS pump, forklift bottles, weld-on beadlocks, shocks, seats, seatbelts, wiring, lights, paint, brakes, rebuild axles, high steer arms...
That's a short list, but none of it costs more than $200. But it will add up fast, so I'm going to spread out the spending.
The engine was free, I just need to reassemble it. The transmission, bellhousing, and a new clutch cost $150. I paid $100 for a pair of Wagoneer Dana 44s that are complete. I have all of the tubing to build the cage left over from building my Bronco last year. So it's a good start. Oh, and a set of half-worn out 35" Boggers for $160 if I'll ever get around to picking them up.

Craig, I have a cad file for some 15" DIY beadlocks that are pretty sweet if you know somebody that can cut them out for you. I am about to start looking into gettin somebody around here to cut some for me. I can get you all the grade 8 bolts you need real cheap too, just let me know.

what's the design, brad? how many bolts? there's a couple of places in tupelo that do it. i think it would be bet. 30 and 40 bucks/wheel.
there's a vendor on the cmsja site that has some for under 200 i think. that's what i was going to go with.

They got a plasma cam computer controlled plasma cutter in the Industrial tech department. Andy Westfall is the one that knows how to work it. If you have a CAD file of anything and you provide the steel I'm sure he'll help you cut it out. He made cage gussets for his TJ on it. Andy's on the coast right now. In August he'll be up here back at school. You're best bet is wait til then if you can. -RC

There are 30 bolts. They are designed for the d-hole wagon wheels like mine. Yeah, you probably couldnt get them cut for under 200 (unless you have a connection) and you still have to buy the steel. Does the one on cmsja come with the hardware?

If we could get the hookup with Andy, that would be cool... Craig I would go in halves on a sheet of 1/4 steel and get him to cut 2 sets. These are supposed to nest on a 4' x 4'-6" sheet.

You know I have one of those CNC Plasma Cam machines as well. Talk about one big job perk.... I wouldn't mind being a shop teacher sometimes. You still get to use it as a principal or whatever? -RC

RC - Man I have access to it all now! Craig, I would be glad to attempt to cut these out. I wouldn't even expect payment if someone showed up with metal, RC (Cola) and a Moon Pie.
