I just pulled my drivers side axle shaft out to replace the ujoint, well i have broken two so far, it looks like one of the ears is messed up and is letting one of the ujoint caps fall out
so i went ahead and ordered some alloy usa shafts, but they wont be here til like the 19th,
i need to mve my samurai, so my 2 question are:
1. can i drive it without the axle shaft in?
and
2. in the rotor, on the outer side there is the bearing that contacts the spindle, is the rotor supposed to be filled with grease around that bearing and on the inner side??
thanks, dan

pull the inner shaft out and reinstall the outer. plug the axle tube with rags... I wouldn't drive it much though... not because its not safe, but dirt, dust and sand can make its way into the diffs. The bearings should be packed with grease but that whole place inside there probably won't be "filled". What are you gonna do with the old shafts? You are running waggy axles right? I will take em off your hands if you didn't have plans for them.

it will be ready for sure, thats why i went ahead and spent the money on the new shafts, is there any need for beefed up diff covers?? i was thinking of gettting some at least one for the front,
i am going to hang on to them for now, at least until after this ride as spares, but youll be first in line if i decide i dont need them

you won't need the outer shaft in there as long as the axle uses free wheeling hubs. as long as the spindle is bolted back on and the spindle nuts (that hold the rotor and wheel hub on) are tightened correctly, you won't have any problems. the bearings that ride on the spindle are the wheel bearings. the outer shaft just floats in that design.

oh, just tack the caps on and go for a while...that always worked for me. and on the new shafts use full circle clips, so you won't have to go through this again.

the stock front cover is pretty tough, the rear not so much... Its not necessary but I would get one for the front and move the front one to the rear. I have bashed on my stock front and it is holding up fine... the rear I peeled back on the last ride and I just fixed it and welded a rock ring on it.

i don't have one here...can assist next week if needed though.
yeah, i wouldn't even worry about it until you bash a cover...the front will take a pretty big hit before puncturing, but the back one is most likely thin like Brad said.
