It never registered to me that CJ7's had fuel injection until I was working on an 86 model last night that someone had converted over to a carb. It still has the computer and sensors still in place, but the throttle body has been exchanged for a carb. When was FI first put on a Jeep?
We are having a problem with the motor just cutting off momentarily. It usually occurs on deacceleration or idle. I am sure it may happen at higher RPM's but the momentum of the motor will keep it running. It is just a momentary electrical open and it goes right back to running. I wonder if it could have something to do with the botched up electrical system with the computer still running through the ignition? We put a new coil, plugs, cap and rotor button on. Any ideas? - thanks.

I thought the 81-86 models had a computer-controlled carburetor for emissions? They supposedly ran terribly.

Maybe that is the case. It has the O2 sensor and all of the signs of a fuel injection system. The reason it made me think FI is that it had a lot of open plugs to the rear of the carb. It looks like someone converted it to a carb and left the plugs undone. We got the electrical problem fixed! I shocked the owner when I pulled out a large pair of wire cutters and sliced the computer wiring harness in half. The distrubutor control module was running through the computer so we rewired it and she straigtened right up. I guess something in the computer or sensors was causing the control module to momentarily shut down. It was a primitive system and needed to be gone.

At least you got it working again! It's called evolution, right? The wires you don't need get weeded out
