I have found a 68 Jeepster Commando Truck. The guy is the original owner, but I have not seen it. Does anyone know much about these trucks. It has the "dauntless" buick v-6, and is completely stock.

I would value it comparable to an international scout. People either love the way they look or they hate them.
The parts will not be worth anything to swap into something.
On the positive side, Rusty from Tupelo has one of those dauntless V-6 in his CJ-5 and it performs very well for him.

Both of the pictures yall found are convertibles, the one I am looking at is a pickup, it looks like a mix between an early bronco with a half cab and a scrambler. The front end is made like the picture Brad posted above. The blue truck posted above is a newer model, looks like a 72. I would buy it if it was cheap and I could convince the guy to sell it. He says his grandson may want to fix it, but I doubt it. I'll keep worrying him until he names a price, but like I said it must be cheap. It has not been cranked in about 8 years.

After 2 years of asking I think the guy finally wants to sell it. I went by and looked at it two days ago. He said he might give it to me if I can get it running. (you can't beat free!) It has a d30 rear end that has a broke ring gear. What is the best to do with this? He said he has fixed the diff one time before. Are they worth fixing? I know it is fairly weak for a rear axle. Brad, what are you going to do with the seats out of the cj-5? This truck I am trying to buy needs those bucket seats. He replaced the buckets long ago with a bench out of an old buick station wagon. Let me know on the seats.

It should be a Dana 27 front and Dana 44 rear. Did he fix the rear axle or have a shop do it? It sounds like the gears weren't set up right. If its a D44, I would just put a new gearset in it. I only have the passenger seat out of the CJ5 and its not in very good shape. I think there are a set of seats in the back of Scotty that are in good shape, but I don't know what Jeep wants to do with them.

That's a pretty cool deal IMO. I saw a good looking built Commando in Moab in 2000...the Dauntless is one of the most popular engines for swapping into flatfenders.

It would make a neat truck. He fixed the gearset himself. That axle did not look like a 44 though. I believe the 44 was optional for the rear. It has a big pto driven winch on it. It has A/C He has done a SOA, and it made it look good. But I dont know what kind of angle the driveshafts are at.
What did those seats that Jeep have come out of?

They are replacement high back vinyl seats for a CJ. They are black.

The guy said I can have the jeep for free. He just wants to see it run again.
What should I do about that weak d30 rear diff? Where is a good parts source for a ring and pinion set?

The track width on a postal jeep is supposed to be a couple of inches shorter than a civi jeep to make room for the door to slide on the postal jeep .

I found out that the Dana 30 rear used in the Commando for a short time was 53" WMS to WMS according to www.jeeptech.com/axle/d30r.htmlaccording to this guy, www.tfsja.org/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1195576298 his postal rear axle is 52". Thats close enough that it should work. Only talking a half inch on either side. The perches may have to be moved but should be an easy swap... plus the DJ rear probably has a limited slip. New wheels with proper backspacing would fix any rubbing issues if there were any. Is the commando bolt pattern 5 on 5.5"?
