well what can i say. this however doesn't surprise me. some of the new teachers out there are not too far ahead of their students intellectually. i personally know teachers that i had split level (4000/6000) classes with at state that have no right to teach children English or anything for that matter. the failings of our public school system run deep. it begins with teacher education at the state universities across the country. there is such a shortage of teachers around that programs will accept just about anybody to teach. additionally, the alternative route to teaching, at least in MS, only requires 6 weeks of classroom instruction before a new teacher enters a classroom. obviously this is not enough time to learn effective teaching and discipline methods. it's like sending a person to med. school for six weeks, then allowing them to treat patients on their own. teaching should be held to the same standards as other professions. it truly requires a "professional" to tackle the important task of educating the young whippersnappers. sorry for ranting, if you want more info. check out the book A DIFFERENT KIND OF TEACHER by John Taylor Gatto. it's a really good read.

didn't mean to sound so harsh about the alternative route, because i have seriously considered doing just that to get into a classroom.

Being a public school teacher myself I can testify to the fact that it is not easy to just walk into the classroom and start teaching. This alternative route that you are talking about still requires you to have a 4 year degree in the subject that you going to teach. You also have to pass a test called the Praxis (not simple) and student teach a whole semester in which you are graded on your teaching skills by a professional teacher (I have a student teacher in my room right now). The alternative route still requires a whole semester of what is called the "education block", so at a minimum you are looking at teacher training lasting a year not counting the 4 year degree. It took me 5 years to complete an Industrial Technology degree with an emphasis in education.
President Bush's "No Child Left Behind Act" even expects elementary teacher assistants to obtain a certain level of education.
As a 1st year teacher I had to complete what was called MTAI (Mississippi Teacher Assessment Instrument). This was no walk in the park. I completed a 4" 3 ring binder of materials that had to cover a whole year. There were 30 indicators that I had to covered in 2 class periods. If you failed any one of them you would be given one more chance before you were asked to leave.
By the way, emergency certificates are no longer issued under the No Child Left Behind Act.
Are there teachers that should not be in the classroom? O course! Are there doctors that should not be practicing? Of Course! In my 7 years of teaching I have never run across anyone that would tolerate this kind of action especially on the high school level.
Sorry this is so long it just kind of hit a sensitive spot.

didn't mean to offend you. i wasn't attacking anyone personally, just the way the system works and it is just my opinion. granted, one does have to have a four year degree in the subject he wishes to teach, but those four years are not spent learning teaching methods or acquiring any teaching skills. personally, i am scared to go through the alternative route program and then enter the classroom after a few weeks of instruction. student teaching is done during the education major's senior year after they have had much more time to prepare.
from my understanding of the alt. route literature, there was no student teaching. one simply completed the class time required by the program, procured a teaching assignment, taught for 1 year, and at the end of that year his performance would be graded and the district either awarded or denied him teaching licensure.
i still have the info. somewhere. i was looking into it because my degree is in English and i thought i would enjoy the job.
i stand corrected if that is not the way it works, and again my intent was not to offend or inflame anyone.

hey man you didn't offend me at all. Please don't think it bothered me. Sometimes the text doesn't show the true emotion. I competely agree with you in the fact that there are some loop holes in the system, but for the majority of those who think that teaching is an easy route and just do it for a job will quickly find out that they aren't going to make it. The system is not perfect, but there are standards in place that will weed out the majority of the slackers. If someone truly teaches students they will tell you that a year and a half of work is crammed into 10 months. If someone slacks on the job sooner or later the system will catch up with them. You are right about the 6 weeks of training. However, that is only for the college level. I am living in the high school world. My wife has a bachelors in marketing and an MBA and was able to walk into the classroom at EMCC and start teaching. She has to complete those classes within the first 2 years of teaching. To my knowledge you have to have a valid teaching certificate to teach public high school. That professor that you are talking about probably has that on his door to prove that things like this are noticed and are ridiculous. Please don't think I was offended, I just enjoyed engaging in some stimulating conversation.

Must be different standards here in Lousyana.. The teachers here went on strike a few years ago because an overwhelming percentage of grade school children failed the leap test.. There was an uproar and the state decided that the failure was do to unqualified teachers.. So they where going to test the techers and make them be certified.. They all went on strike to protest the certification test.. Pretty sad... I can tell you.. If I cant do my job or I am asked to prove that I can do my Job.. .Going on strike will not help me keep my job.. As it was ..It was during the school year so all the state could do was drop it so that the teachers would go back to the class rooms... I grew up with a great bunch of teachers.. I consider myself well educated.. I have a BA from Georgetown. And I am honestly ashamed at the state of the Louisiana school system.. I spend nearly $5000 a year on a Private school to ensure that my daughter gets a proper education.. She can count to 100 and can read books on a 2nd grade level.. Or at least she can read the books that my friends 2nd grader brings home..(from public school) By the way... My daugther is In PRE-K 4 . I have the utmost respect for people who dedicate their lives to teaching others.. Teaching is a very noble profession.. But an insane amount of people are graduating without the ability to read or write ..And that is a failure of the system not of the child.. I am sorry for my long post.. But like you guys this topic is one that I am touched by.. I dont want to have to spend $70,000 on my daughters education (assuming tuition doesnt go up) before she even reaches college. but it looks like I have no other option.. (at least as long as I am in this state...) I am sure this will only stir more people to post their opinions and I hope I havent offended anyone. Sooooooooo........ Unless you are one of the majority of uncertified teachers running around the state of La. teaching our children to say.. SKRIMPS and URANGE.. I am not talking about you....
