My name is Clint and I live in Greenwood. It has been a while since I visited the board. I sold my wrangler several years ago and I stopped checking in with the site.
I have been wanting a newer cherokee project for a while. Well the other day I was passing a used car lot here in town and I saw an old 98 grand cherokee on the lot and it had 750 OBO on the window. So today I went back and bought it for $450. It needs motor work, but I can start a new thread on that later. (It is a model that I have wanted since high school, more info later).
Just glad to have another jeep. I will upload a pic tomorrow. --Clint

Gotta love a good deal, or at least cheap

I like those ZJ jeeps as well. The coil suspension is nice and flexes pretty well compared to an XJ, plus it rides better. Does yours have the 4.0 or the 5.2? If it's got the AWD on it you can swap that out for a 231 transfercase pretty easily. I did it on mine and I think I wrote about how I did it on this site. It really drove better after I did it. Congrats on the new Jeep. -RC

I also wanted to add I have a '95 ZJ right now that I bought for parts. I'm using the drivetrain and possibly the brakes out of it for my M38 project. Anyway it was a flood victim from Katrina but there's no visible water damage anywhere. If you need any parts off it you're more than welcome to them. I plan on taking the carcass to the scrap yard as soon as I pick through it. All the body panels are good on it. All the glass is on it too. Let me know if you want anything. -RC

Thanks for the replies. RC it is 5.9 limited. I have been looking for one for cheap for a while. I cranked it today. It sounds like a rod is knocking, and I am not surprised. It will be a good rebuild project. RC I need a good front bumper (plastic), a good passenger side finder, and possibly the rad support. What color interior is your parts ZJ? Here is a pic or two of it:

I also looked under the truck today and noticed that the front driveshaft is gone. This truck is supposed to have the 249 full time transfercase. I drove it up and down the driveway. I assume the transfercase has been swapped, but who knows. I will check that tag on it tomorrow to see what model case it has. It will still need a front shaft anyway though.

5.9 is awesome. You're lucky to get one, but too bad about the rod knock. I'm betting you have the 249 case, but the hydraulic coupler locked up and it was in 4wd all the time. Someone took the shaft out so it would drive better (otherwise it barks the tires whenever you turn). My old '97 came like that. It's 249 was locked up. It's very common. I'll look to see if I have a front shaft. I definitely have a fender for you. My jeep is the tan color though, not white. The front bumper on mine is missing though. Here's a pic of it: I'll call Dan tonight. I'll look to see if I have the front shaft. -RC

Ok RC, that sounds good. I figured that it still has the 249. I have heard that the hydraulic coupler only lasts for about 100k miles then it goes bad. The jeep has 178k on it, so removing the shaft would be an easy fix. Maybe you will have an extra front shaft.
I may have to find another parts jeep!!

I just thought about it, and I realized that parts ZJ I have has the 249 in it. I'm getting rid of the 249 and putting a 231 in it's place-- don't need the AWD on the M38. Do you want it? The ZJ had 110K miles on it, so there's no promises if the hydraulic coupler is still good, but the price is right. It's sitting in Mark's shop right now attached to the trans. It's already been pulled. Still looking for the driveshaft... -RC

RC if you want send me a pm with your phone number, and a good time to call, and I will call you and talk. I am going to need some parts. When i pull the engine I am going to pull everything like you did with the jeep above. So it will be a good time to fix everything.

Good luck with pulling that sucker out. I used the sawzall on a lot of the body on mine and it was still hard to yank out. I PMed you. When do you plan on pulling it out? -RC
