As if I wasn't doing enough to the jeep, while I had the rear bumper off, I decided to do something about a tire carrier. I had built a swing out one couple of years ago (because pre-made ones are ) and it crashed and burned the first trip to HS. I found the method by which I had made the hinge pin just wasn't strong enough. So here was take-two.
First, I purchased this greaseable bearing hinge system from comp4x4.com (www.comp4x4.com) in Utah. It has a 1000# rating and a sleeve that you weld into the bumper and then slide the spindle into to keep from having to weld the spindle at the top of the bumper making that a weak spot:
Then went to work. Here are a few shots.
The vertical bar on the hinge is a hold-open pin that I still have to drill a hole for it to drop into.
Used some old brackets that came of the kid's training wheels and made a mount for my 4way lug wrench.
The latch is basically a 5/8 bolt with a washer and a piece of 1/2 rod welded on to make a t-handle. The hole in the square tube is sleeved so the tubing is wholly sealed. A nut on the back of a piece of angle holds it all tight.
Lastly, I fabricated a little bracket to hold my license plate.
I wished I could have mounted my hi-lift or a Jerry can to it but the space didn't work out. I wanted it all to tuck close up to the rear. Probably will end up mounting the hi-lift to the hood.
The only oops is that I was concentrating on not blocking the gas cap but I welded the hinge just a little too far in and it partially blocks my tailgate. Bummer, but oh well. Hopefully this one will end up lasting a little while longer. Now got to blow it all apart, paint it and then back to bodywork.
