I've been thinking about a trailer that would haul my Jeep, and have the camping facilities, too. I liked rsmith's rig I got to see at Gray rock...and have thought about a similar setup...but was curious if anyone has ever seen a factory deal similar to that. I can find "toy haulers" all day long, but they're not big enough for a vehicle.
The family would be a lot more likely to "participate" with amenities.
Thanks.

This was at Hot Springs the at Labor Day. This is the only store bought version I have ever seen of what you are looking for. Most people build what you are looking for. This is what I built using a 21 foot fifth wheel camper and a 34 foot gooseneck trailer. Most people use a slide camper but I found a good deal on a light weight camper. Rob actually just bought a slide camper this weekend for this purpose.

DavidCJ7 does something that is pretty cool. He pulls a Pop Up camper behind his trailer that his jeep is on. Maybe he will comment on how well that works.

The camper is so light that the fuel difference with or without the camper is undetectable. The only downside to the pop-up is no shower. Some of the parks have shower facilities so it is not a problem.

Featherlite makes an awsome dual purpose rig. Check out their website.

I just traded my 30' fifth wheel camper in on a Alpenlite truck camper. The bottom box is 12' not inculding the living quarters over the cab of the truck. It has a slide-out on one side that makes a world of difference. I had a small truck camper about 2 years ago and it was great, but with two kids and the wife cramped in that thing we ended up getting frustrated with each other due to the cramped space. This unit with the slide-out is going to makes a world of difference I believe. I am planning on locating a 30' minimum gooseneck trailer to put it on and put the rig behind the camper.

Jason,
Does your camper have a slide out?

Jason, Does your camper have a slide out? No, it would be to heavy if it had one. My camper weighs 3400 unloaded. With my jeep weighing 5000 and my trailer weighing 4000, I am close to the limitations of the trailer. I weighed the other day and I was 20K total. My camper is pretty roomy for what it is. It is just me and my wife and we have plenty of room. It will be interesting to see how Rob's does. His probably has more room than my camper with that slide out. I don't know what his weighs though. His body of his camper is 12 foot where mine is 16 foot. My camper is 7 foot wide where his is probably 6 but has that slide part.

I have been thinking about putting a camper on a trailer but until I saw yours I have never even imagined putting fifth wheel camper on a trailer. What did you use for a base?

I have been thinking about putting a camper on a trailer but until I saw yours I have never even imagined putting fifth wheel camper on a trailer. What did you use for a base? I bought my camper first. I had been looking for a slide camper and could not find one so got this instead. Once I had my camper, I measured the body of the camper and added three foot for storage 15 foot for my jeep and came up with 34 foot. I then started pricing out gooseneck trailers with a low deck. I wanted a low deck to keep the wind resistence down and the total weight of the rig down. I ended up ordering the trailer from A-1 trailers in vidilia, GA. As far as mounting the camper on the trailer. It is somewhat permenantly mounted. I pulled the camper up on the trailer with my winch and got it where I wanted it. I used the jacks to hold the camper up and pulled the axles out. I then built a frame that mounts where the axles did and welded onto the trailer. When I go down the road, I bring my jacks up and my camper is only supported by this stand. I did this because gooseneck trailers flex alot and I felt that if I mounted the camper totally rigid to the trailer that it would flex and tear it apart. That is one of the things that scares me about mounting slide campers to gooseneck trailers. I love my set up. We have used it four times for a jeep ride and about a dozen times just carrying it around to local places and camping. It is so extremely easy to pull in at Hot Springs and unload my jeep and unhook the trailer and I am ready to ride. We also bought a TJ so that when we go on regular vacations, we can carry it and ride around to see the sites.

I think the 20k included the truck?

MY truck weighs 6000 so my trailer with load is 14K. I have a 99 Dodge with Cummins. It has one of those performance chip things in it. I feel comfortable I could pull 20K with it with no problems... other than stopping

I had an idea this weekend. I found a trailer in the Tradewinds that used to be a fifth wheel camper - 2000 model. The camper itself had caught on fire and extinguished before the lower half was burned. In order to salvage what he could the fellow stripped the camper off and made a flatbed trailer. I can get the trailer for $2000 which includes a Warn 8274 winch built in. It has trailer brakes and 2 10000# axles with 8 lug rims.
My question is: Does anyone know what kind of material these frames are made out of? I can't imagine it would be too heavy since weight is of concern in a camper, but I may be badly mistaken.
I also found a fifth wheel camper in the Tradewinds that has hurricane damage for $600. I could sell the appliances, make my money back and have a trailer frame to build on. Just an idea I wanted to throw around.
