It's been a while since we posted an update on this project. We've been making a push to finish it up. RC has been hanging out with us this week to lend a hand.
If you notice under the jeep, the transmission is out. When we went to hook up the clutch linkage, there wasn't enough travel. After some investigation, we found that we were shipped the wrong pressure plate. We are now waiting on the new one to arrive.
We got the winch installed early this week.
The wiring is moving forward, but we still have a little way to go.
We bled the 4 wheel disc brakes this week and chased a few leaks. The brakes are powered by a hydroboost system. We are waiting on one fitting from Vanco to be able to finish up the power steering plumbing.
We are waiting on that to install the new aluminum radiator.
Charles finished plumbing the airlines to the ARB's this morning.
Here is a picture of the passenger side engine compartment.
We have just decided on wheels and tires and will be ordering them early next week. We are also working on researching seats and hope to have something on the way next week.
If anyone wants to stop by to help, give us a shout!

Lookin sweet. And tricked out with all the goodies too!! Did ya'll narrow those axles yourselves or buy them special built? What size tires did you decide on?

Sam's Offroad built the axles for us: Dana 44 in the front and a Dana 60 in the rear. Both are equipped with 4:56 gearing and ARB lockers. Disc brakes on all four corners. The BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM2's (35 x 12.50 R15) arrived last Friday and the Allied Rockathon Daytona beadlocks are supposed to be here today.

We've gotten the transmission back in. The problem turned out to be the Centerforce flywheel. It was thinner than the stock one. We ended up putting a new OEM flywheel in with a Centerforce II clutch and pressure plate. We also had to lengthen the clutch adjusting rod that goes between the bellcrank and the fork. I'm really not sure why that was necessary, but everything seems to work good with it lengthened. We have also finished installing the one ton driveshafts.
We finally got a little work out of RC assembling the beadlocks. (LOL)
We created a tool to help with our torquing pattern.
The new tires are a little bigger than the 30" rollers currently on the jeep.

What about when I helped take the 300lb transmission/transfercase combo on and off? That was some work, wasn't it?

A fun little finishing touch:
We hung the dashboard from the ceiling and assembled it before we put it in the jeep. The front side:

We named our two CJ's a couple of years ago. Now they are labeled:

Just a quick update. We couldn't figure out why we weren't getting fuel to the engine this morning. We finally discovered that we had installed the fuel pump backwards. I guess we were blowing bubbles in the fuel tank. A seasoned mechanic friend told us that the wiring is always on the output end. We'll have to remember that! About 4:30 this afternoon we cranked it up! It's still running a little rough, but just hearing it fire up was fantastic!

Let's see - there are only about a thousand little details to take care of at this stage of the build. In the last week we have been working on installing the CB, PA Speaker and antenna and backup lights and getting all the wiring for these run neatly through the tire carrier.
We also figured out that the ARB solenoid valves were mounted backwards and they have now been reversed.
Currently we are working on customizing a pipe to run from the throttle body to an air filter.
We ordered seats last week. In the front we decided to go with Bestop Trailmax II Pro's and for the rear a Rampage 50/50 split fold and tumble bench seat. We have lined up someone to immediately recover all the seats in Mossy Oak upholstery fabric. We are also going to have the seats in Desoto recovered in the same fabric.
We have had an iVault Security Floor Console on backorder since August and it is scheduled to be shipped around the first of December.
The fuel injection has been an interesting story. A couple of years ago now we ordered a system from a John Wilson from Columbus, Georgia doing business as CustomEFIS. The system he was selling is a multiport based on a GM ECM. The system has the ability to interface with a computer to datalog and he included a chip burner for the fine tuning. At this point, ordering that system has been our biggest mistake. He sent the parts piecemeal and it took forever to get him to send everything. Now we need his technical expertise to finish it up and correspondence with him is very spotty. He had offered to come to Starkville over Thanksgiving to help us finish tuning it, but he has now reneged. We are in the process of studying up on ECM's to be able to finish it ourselves if John Wilson doesn't come through for us. If anyone has expertise in this particular area, we would welcome their help!
We've still got one beadlock to assemble and we're waiting on RC to come back to town to do that.
Addendum: The seats and seat belts did arrive today. I have just placed an order for 18 yards of coated 1000d Cordura fabric in the new Mossy Oak Breakup pattern. It's going to feel kinda strange seeing the upholstery ripped off the brand new seats - but I think the results will be worth it!

Time for an update! We spent the weekend finishing up the engine tuning. John Wilson came from Columbus, Georgia to help, and teach, us how to fine tune the fuel injection system. We had several problems that had to be tracked down, but by mid-afternoon today the stroker is running fantastic! We drove the jeep around town some and took it up to highway speeds for the first time.

Why isn't #2 firing?

The engine is running awesome now with some really nice torque. We discovered a few new problems now. The fan blade is pushing air forward through the radiator, instead of backwards. We're pretty sure the blade came from a similar jeep engine with a serpentine belt system. Do some six cylinder jeeps have a fan that turns one direction, and some turn the other direction?
Our biggest obstacle now is the transmission. It is a NOS SM420 that we bought from Novak. Second gear sounds bad, and it is sticking in third gear! This is a huge disappointment. We are not looking forward to swapping out a transmission at this stage of the build!

We're learning something new at every turn! And almost every lesson involves re-doing something! Today's lesson: On jeeps with v-belts, the fans turn clockwise (looking at the engine from the front). This is referred to as standard rotation. On jeeps with serpentine belts, the fans turn counter-clockwise (reverse rotation). This jeep originally had a v-belt, but one of the things we changed on this hybrid engine was switching to a serpentine belt. We ordered a new fan blade from JEGS, but realized I ordered the wrong one after it arrived. We now have a correct blade installed. We also learned that the fan clutch is direction dependent and naturally the new one we had installed was the wrong one and we had to switch it, too.
The transmission is a whole different can of worms. We opened the top of the tranny to see if we could see any obvious problems.
When we described the two problems to Novak, they were quick to ship us another new SM420. The biggest problem now is that the new transmission is NOT in the jeep! LOL

You taught me something about the rotations of fans. I had no clue there were different rotations.
