WOW. that doesn't even look like the same jeep. The black does look good but it is impossible to clean and keep from scratching.

Jim the 5 looks great! Black is certainly sleek looking. You have made great progress. I am going to use you as an inspiration to finish some of my projects.

looks great, Jim! Better put a topcoat on the POR15 before it chalks. I think the black looks great too...it's a completely different jeep now.

Thanks ya'll. Yeah, Looks like black is winning out over red in the family too. I think the quote was something like, "You can paint it anything except yellow, but that black sure does look good." According to POR's web site I can bondo and paint right over cured POR15 as long as I scuff it up good enough. They also say that the UV chalking effect doesn't affect the rust prevention nature of POR15. The primary purpose is just to keep the rust away until we get good weather again (spring probably since I don't have even a shop to apply paint in) til I can sand it down, apply a little filler to take out some of the ugly patchwork look, and give it a final topcoat. Probably gonna end up just buying new fenders and windshield frame since these are rusted pretty bad. I haven't really thought about keeping scratches out, I just remember trying to buff out all the water sopts off my car back in the day. I'm hoping that going with a single stage paint system will allow me to just clean and respray areas that get messed up on the trail without too much trouble. Guess it's not swiss cheese anymore.

I'd keep the fenders and windshield frame and save the money for something else. THey'll end up getting bashed in on the trail.
I really didn't know if the chalking would hurt or not...so not.
