New pistons and decked head. Most of the blow-by was the exhaust valves. The machine shop had to replace all 3. Polished crank Engine bored .040 over. Gotta love the cross-hatching on the newly machined bores. Painted it

That's about as far as we got. Next weekend I'm going home and we'll finish the rest. I think the hard part's done, so I think we should be running it next weekend. I'm really excited to run it. It definitely looks a LOT better going together than it did coming apart. The amount of oil sludge that came off has really got to help it perform now. Can't wait to run it. -RC

I appreciate you sharing those pictures. I rebuilt a 3000 diesel about a month ago. There are a lot of similarities between the diesel and gas burner. Those old tractors are hard to put down. You will be able to enjoy that tractor for another 40 years.

Thanks Rob. There are a lot of similarities. The head gasket set says "4000 gas or diesel" on it. I guess they made everything simple back then. Yeah I think the tractor will last another 40 years at the rate we use it (we only put maybe a few hundred hours on it a year). I learned to drive on it, and Dad's had it for 30 years, so I don't think we're going to let it die anytime soon. Can't wait to finish it and get it running though. -RC

I went home over the weekend and Dad and I finished it up. We put a new fuel pump on it and primed the system. It started right up and ran great-- for about 30 seconds. We can't get it to run longer than that. We diagnosed it as a fuel delivery problem. It will run until the float bowl gets low and then it dies and won't start again until the bowl fills back up. I think the fuel pump is working, but I also think we got some dirt in the lines putting them back on the tractor. We have good flow in the lines, but it's barely dripping into the bowl of the carb. We tried cleaning the line at the carb and it ran great for about 5 mins, but then it kept dying and the bowl wouldn't stay filled. The good news is that the motor runs, and it runs great. No clanking or weird noises coming from the crankcase or anything. Dad's going to take the lines off this weekend and clean them. I feel sure it will fix our problem and it will run great after that. -RC

We figured out the fuel pump issues. There's a base to the pump that rides on the cam. It's only 1/2" long or so. Somehow in the process of taking the motor apart we lost it and therefore forgot to put it on the pump. No one knew it was missing-- very frustrating. All the time the motor was running, it was running without the pump and just relying on gravity to feed the carb. We got a new base and installed it, and man it runs like a brand new motor. Very exciting. I went home last weekend and dad and I finished up the project. Drove it out of the shop and let it run for about 20 mins to get it warmed up and the valves seated Adjusted the valves one last time Put on the sheetmetal Project done We tried it out disking up the dove field. You can tell there is a lot more power now. I'm glad the project had a happy ending and was successful, even if it did take a long time. It's good to have the tractor back running, and running well. -RC

Hello, new to this web site, actually came across it while searching how to adjust the valves on my 69 Ford 4000 diesel tractor, love the pix of your tractor, have actually done about the same with mine (my dad bought it new in 69 so it has seen many hard hours). Could you tell me how you adjusted the valves, in what order, I know you start at the radiator at work back, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks so much, again love the pix, hope to get mine up and running again soon.
